Why Gibson?

Why did Gibson discontinue the Les Paul Junior? It’s a fantastic guitar, an equal to the Esquire. From what I read around the forums Gibson dropped it in favour of the LPj. There is no comparison – the LPj has a carved maple cap and a neck pickup! Heresy!

I’m kicking myself that I didn’t buy a faded finish model before they all disappeared. Of course the fact that I am gassing for a Junior makes it even worse – I considered the new Melody Maker, thinking I could remove the jazz pickup (I kid!) and extra knobs and fit a custom cut pickguard to hide the pickup route. Then I discovered the MM has a carve top and a belly-cut! That’s just not right.

Why Gibson, why?
