Reboot.

To add a little colour I switched to Pure Button Polish. This is shellac with an amber hue. I planned to apply a few coats of this then switch back to the transparent for a few final coats. No change in the application method, and after 2 layers I was happy with the colour, but not the coverage. Colour comparison It’s not very easy to see in this comparison shot, but on the bass side of the body it hasn’t taken the colour evenly. I applied another coat to see if that would even it out, but no such luck. So on a whim I wiped it off with meths, sanded it with 600 grit and started again. I am building up the clear layers again, and am noticing that there are areas that are drinking it up like nobody’s business – I seem to have either sanded through/wiped away the sealer in a few areas.

So I am slowly building the layers for even coverage. A few more thin layers and I should be able to level it again and apply the button polish.

Lesson learned – don’t make a hasty decision. I think I probably could have evened the colour out with a few more thin coats, and I would be on to the neck by now instead of once again slowly building the layers.
