I decided to sell the Keystones in my US Std partscaster and make it my open-G Stones\/Black Crowes guitar. Initial plan was to use another Tonerider but single bridge units\u00a0 seemingly always being out of stock forced a re-think. I then came across some pickup builders here in the UK, and decided I would give one or two a try.<\/p>\n<p>After reading a couple of reviews and checking out some youtube vids I decided on an <a title=\"Oil City pickups\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oilcitypickups.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Oil City<\/a> Diesel Tap bridge pickup. Hot wound to 9k with a tap at 6k and only \u00a342+ postage for a handmade in the UK pickup? Nicely  packaged including a wiring diagram (which I of course totally ignored!).<\/p>\n<p>Cloth wound, vintage cloth covered wires and proper fibreboard it certainly has a traditional look. A nice touch is the supplied slot head screws.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Mic-wiring.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-920 alignleft\" title=\"Micawber wiring\" src=\"https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Mic-wiring-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Messy!\" width=\"250\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Mic-wiring-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Mic-wiring.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I originally wired it up with a Tonerider humbucker in the neck and a <a title=\"Axecaster push\/push potentiometers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.axecaster.co.uk\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=11&amp;products_id=126\" target=\"_blank\">push\/push<\/a> pot for the tap. A resistor to tame the highs on the bridge pickup was added. Quite fiddly to solder!<\/p>\n<p>I played it for a few days but I couldn&#8217;t get a true impression of the Diesel Tap because the humbucker was just annoying me! I could not get it to sound good, no matter how I tried. There didn&#8217;t seem to be any position that I would use the humbucker. So out it came.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Esquire-wiring.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-921 alignnone\" title=\"Esquire wiring\" src=\"https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Esquire-wiring-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Esquire-wiring-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Esquire-wiring.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Axecaster-T-tapped-esquire-diagram-sml.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-924\" title=\"Axecaster T tapped esquire diagram sml\" src=\"https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/Axecaster-T-tapped-esquire-diagram-sml-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"124\" height=\"186\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Diesel Tap was rewired for vol+tone full, vol+tone tap and vol+tone cocked wah.\u00a0 (I may adjust that in the future so the tone is bypassed in the the cocked wah setting) As usual, one of our <a title=\"Axecaster single ply 5 hole Esquire pickguards\" href=\"http:\/\/www.axecaster.co.uk\/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;cPath=32_33&amp;products_id=92\" target=\"_blank\">Esquire pickguards<\/a> married up to the Fender holes perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>As I have a &#8220;standard&#8221; cocked wah in my Esquire #1 I used two .0033uF capacitors instead of one, as on the <a title=\"Fender La Cabronita alternative S1 switch wiring\" href=\"https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/?p=503\" target=\"_blank\">La Cabronita. <\/a>With the correct pot values for a single coil the pickup has come alive. It is very ballsy and can growl with the best of them, but responds very nicely to pick attack and rolling back the volume. The tap is noticeably thinner than the full pickup, but not overly so. To be honest I only ordered it to check it out &#8211; I doubt I&#8217;ll use the position much. It has more traditional Tele twang, but the full output can also twang. But for an extra \u00a32 over the Hard Man it was worth having the option.<\/p>\n<p>Comparing it to the Tonerider Hot Classic they are quite similar &#8211; the Oil City has more bite and I think a bit better definition. I am suitably impressed. Sure it&#8217;s 50% more than a Tonerider, but that&#8217;s only \u00a315 and it is hand made here in the UK with great customer service from Ash, the builder.<\/p>\n<p>Oil City will definitely be considered for future builds, especially as the range is expanding into P90s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/US-partscaster-Esquire.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-927\" title=\"US partscaster Esquire\" src=\"https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/US-partscaster-Esquire-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Esquired Open G US Std Tele\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/US-partscaster-Esquire-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/axecaster.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/US-partscaster-Esquire.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Post Script. Alas it is time to retire the pink towel from photo duties.
