Be careful using this method as it is easy to scrape the finish behind the bridge.

The rolled edge of the cover allow the same result when fitted by pressing down from directly above the bridge.

If the cover is loose, which can happen over time/use, simply squeezing together the narrower points of the cover will enable a tighter fit. It can take quite a squeeze, so make sure to have a firm grip so it doesn’t fly out of your hands!

In the picture above the Fender Ashtray Cover is firmly fitted on a Wilkinson WTB Vintage Telecaster Bridge but of course will fit any Fender vintage style bridge plate or any bridge plate made to Fender vintage specs.

(That’s a lot of words for a very simple design!)

EDIT May 2023

*Note that not all brands work or fit the same! Hosco’s version is made to fit by the cover gripping the front and back edges of the bridge plate. The “waist” barely touches some bridges and the cover is made of steel too thick to easily bend (or at all). In the picture below you can see the right side of the “waist” of the cover is not touching the WTB bridge at all but is kept securely in place by the front and back corners of the plate being gripped by the cover.

This means that Hosco covers are only compatible with their own bridge plates or bridge plates with the same length (stated as 86.5mm on the spec diagram). Fender Pat Pend (c.86mm or less in length) plates are not gripped tightly enough for my comfort and have to be “wedged” slightly crookedly for them to stay on while the guitar is being moved around.

Hope this update helps!

Here is a quick look at how *Fender Telecaster Ashtray Bridge Covers work.
